Review methodology
A working document describing how the Character AI guide is researched, sourced and kept current. Every material claim on the main page traces back to one of the source categories below.
Source hierarchy
Not every source carries the same weight. Ranked from heaviest to lightest, the categories that inform published claims are:
- Live product testing. A free-tier account plus a c.ai+ subscription, both used across web, iOS and Android, to verify signup flow, filter behaviour, Rooms, voice calls, Persona, Chat Memories, Imagine Gallery, priority-queue effect during peak hours, and Charms metering on Swipes, Go-ons and Memos.
- Primary platform materials. character.ai homepage and help centre (support.character.ai), the blog at blog.character.ai, App Store and Google Play listings, in-app changelog posts and any statements from Character Technologies leadership.
- Independent third-party research. Peer-reviewed studies and non-profit assessments covering AI companion apps generally — MIT Media Lab, Common Sense Media, Stanford Medicine's Brainstorm Lab. Cited inline where relevant to safety, adolescent risk or usage patterns.
- Community sources. r/CharacterAI (roughly 2.6 million members), the official Discord invited from character.ai/discord, and posts from @character_ai on X. Used for outage patterns, filter workaround discussion, and version-bump feedback.
- Third-party tech press. Wired, The Verge, TechCrunch, Rest of World, and reviews on eesel, StartupHub, WeavAI and Costbench. Used for cross-checking pricing and feature dates, never as the sole source for a claim.
What gets tested versus what gets cited
Anything that moves fast — c.ai+ pricing, filter behaviour, Slow Mode timing, Rooms rollout, mobile availability, Charms caps — is verified in the live product before publication. Anything that requires longitudinal data — impact on loneliness, adolescent developmental risk, engagement patterns across populations — is cited to published research and framed as the finding of that research, not as this site's own conclusion.
Cross-checks for pricing and features
c.ai+ pricing is verified against the character.ai/subscribe page at the moment of publication. Because Character AI has repriced and re-scoped the paid tier multiple times since c.ai+ launched in 2023, any price mentioned in the main guide carries an "as of July 2026" caveat. If a reader spots a change on character.ai after publication, that is a valid correction — see the corrections section on the editorial policy page.
Comparison methodology
The alternatives table on the main guide (Janitor AI, Chai, Replika, Talkie, PolyBuzz, Kindroid) uses six comparison axes: primary use case, content policy, library size, starting price, and the single biggest trade-off. Each platform is described in the terms it advertises itself in, then re-checked against user reports of the current experience on r/CharacterAI and each platform's own subreddit. Prices captured at publication carry a date stamp — this niche reprices often enough that any undated table becomes unreliable within a few months.
Freshness and revision cadence
The main guide is re-reviewed at minimum every 90 days. Out-of-cycle updates trigger on: material pricing changes, filter behaviour shifts confirmed by multiple user reports, mobile app rerating, or a fresh safety-related announcement from Character Technologies. When a page is updated, its dateModified value in schema is bumped; datePublished stays immutable so the record of first publication survives.
Corrections process
Confirmed factual corrections are handled openly. Send a note via LinkedIn (linkedin.com/in/melissablake1) with the claim, the correction, and a source. Verified corrections trigger: (a) an edit to the affected page, (b) an entry on the correction log on the editorial policy page, and (c) a schema dateModified bump. Turnaround target: seven working days.
What does not get done here
To pre-empt some standard misreadings of what this site does:
- No sponsored coverage. Character Technologies has not paid for placement. No other platform mentioned has either.
- No AI-drafted final copy. LLMs are used during research to summarise long primary sources; final prose is written by a human editor.
- No image manipulation of screenshots beyond cropping. Every screenshot published is the app as it was captured.
- No clinical claims. Mental-health or behavioural claims about companion-chat use come from cited research, not from this site's own conclusions.
Conflict-of-interest scan
The editor holds no equity in Character Technologies, no equity in any competitor platform mentioned here, and no equity in the affiliate networks that serve outbound links. If any of that changes, the editorial policy page is where the change gets logged the same day, and affected coverage is re-reviewed independently.
