Age verification
A short page explaining the 18+ gate on this site, why it exists, how it works technically, and what it means (and does not mean) for parents and educators.
Adult self-certification
The gate on first load is a self-certification screen. You confirm you are at least 18 (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher). No ID upload, no biometric check, no government verification service. That is a limit of the mechanism, and the page below explains what the site does and does not do about it.
Once you accept the gate, a lightweight flag is stored in your browser's local storage under a boolean key. On return visits from the same browser, the gate does not appear. Clearing site data, using a different browser, or opening a private window resets the flag.
Two age controls in play
Readers commonly confuse two separate age controls when researching Character AI.
- This site's 18+ gate. Applies to reading editorial coverage on character-ai.io. Self-certification, browser-side flag, no verification.
- Character AI's own 17+ rating. Applies to the app itself. As of November 2024, the App Store and Google Play listings for Character AI are rated 17+. Signup asks for a date of birth. Under-18 accounts route onto a teen-tuned model with tighter filters and a Parental Insights hook a parent can link to. Character Technologies' own policies apply on the platform side.
Detail on how Character AI itself handles teen accounts sits in the content-policy section of the main guide.
Why this site is 18+
Editorial coverage here discusses adult use of an AI companion platform, including pricing decisions, filter behaviour, alternative platforms that are more permissive than Character AI, and research findings that are framed for adult readers. That framing is not aimed at children. Setting the gate at 18 is a policy choice consistent with how the site talks about the product.
Regional variation
Where the local age of majority is above 18, that higher threshold applies. Where local rules require additional verification for adult-focused sites (as some jurisdictions have introduced under recent age-verification laws), those rules apply to you as a reader independently of what this site does technically. The site does not implement those verification frameworks — the self-certification gate is the only control on the site side.
Parents and educators
This site is not a suitable resource for readers under 18. Parents and educators looking for material to inform a conversation about AI companion apps with a younger reader should consult sources scoped for that purpose — Common Sense Media's teen-focused resources are the clearest starting point in this category. If a household needs to enforce the age gate at network level, a standard content filter with a category block on adult sites is more reliable than any self-certification.
Character AI's own Parental Insights feature — added after the October 2024 wave of teen safety changes — is a separate control that lets a parent see limited summary information about a linked teen account. Setup lives inside the Character AI app itself, not on this site.
Data implications of the gate
The gate flag is stored in your browser under local storage. No server-side record of your age acknowledgement is kept, and no personal data is collected during the acknowledgement. Full data-handling detail is on the privacy policy page.
Reporting concerns
If you believe editorial content on this site includes material aimed at minors, or that the framing on any page is inappropriate for adult readers, that is a valid concern. Route it to the editor via LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/melissablake1. Substantive reports are actioned inside the correction window described on the editorial policy page.
